The environment is not polluted by the radiation pollution in China on the whole and the radiation environmental quality remains at the natural base level.

Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant

The continental ¦Ãradiation air absorption dosage rate was at the natural radiation base level at the local areas and the nuclide in the environmental medium, the radioactive nuclide content remained within the natural increase and decrease scope base level. The environment in China was not polluted by radioactivity on the whole and the radioactive environmental quality remains at the original level.

In the areas surrounding the radiation pollution sources, the rate of environmental¦Ãradiation air absorption dosage, the specific activity of the total ¦Âradioactivity of aerosol or precipitation and the concentration of radioactivity nuclide of water, animals and plant samples were within the increase and decrease scope of the natural base level. The monitoring results in the areas surrounding Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in Zhejiang and Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant shows that the total ¦Áand the total ¦Âradiation were far lower than the national standards of household drinking water quality.

To Enhance Management of Nuclear Safety and Radiation Environmental Supervision In 1999, the government arranged 115 nuclear safety and radiation environmental supervision management projects according to the plans (among which there were 17 important projects). Except that individual project was postponed to the end of 2000, all other projects were completed.

Qin Shan Nuclear Power PlantExamination of the Safety of Nuclear Facilities In 1999, State Environmental Protection Administration dispatched over 30 inspection groups and conducted supervision and inspection on the operation, construction, retiring of the nuclear facilities and disposal sites of low and medium radioactive waste.

Monitoring of the Impact of Nuclear Accidents in Japan and Korea During the period of the nuclear accidents in Japan and Korea, the environmental protection bureaus in 19 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly governed by the Central Government conducted emergent monitoring immediately. Monitoring results show that China was not influenced by the accidents.

Environmental Management in Tianwan Bay Nuclear Power Plant In 1999, State Environmental Protection Administration ratified the safety analysis report and the environmental impact assessment report of Tianwan Bay Nuclear Power Plant.

Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant

Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant is situated to the east of Shenzhen, at Malingjiao of Dakeng village on the coast of Daya Bay. The site is 45km (straight line distance) from downtown Shenzhen and 50km from Hong Kong.

Dakeng was chosen as the site after exhaustive survey and comprehensive review of factors such as seismic geology, cooling water source, environmental impact and grid configuration etc. The site, free from capable faults within 20km radius area and with low crustal stress, enjoys favorable geological stability.

The nuclear reactors were supplied by Framatome of France, and turbine generators by GEC-Alsthom, while the overall technical responsibility was assumed by Electricite de France (EdF). The first batch of concrete was poured on the permanent works area on August 7, 1987. Following civil works, erection and commissioning tests on the Unit 1, fuel-loading took place in May, criticality in July, grid connection in August and commercial operation in December, 1993. The Unit 2 is scheduled for commercial operations six months behind the Unit 1. When both units go on stream in 1994, the annual output of electricity will be 10 billion kWh. As the plant will be operated in parallel with the pumped storage power station which takes power during trough-load periods, the annual output will become 12.6 billion kWh. Supplying 70% of the output to Hong Kong and 30% to Guangdong grids, GNPS will contribute its bit to the economic development and prosperity in the two regions.
