Industrial solid
waste was an important factor affecting environmental quality. Discharging and storing
industrial solid waste not only occupies a great deal of land, but also may pollute
surface and ground water sources.
In 1998, the total
amount of industrial solid waste generated was 800 million tons. 640 million tons, or 80%
of the total, was generated by industries at the county-level and above. The remaining 160
million tons was generated by TVIE's. The total amount of industrial solid waste
discharged was 70.34 million tons, of which 52.12 million tons (74.1%) was discharged by
TVIE's. The total amount of hazardous waste generated was 9.74 million tons, of which 9.05
million tons, or 92.9% of all hazardous waste, was generated by industries at the
county-level and above.
In 1998, the
comprehensive utilization rate of industrial solid waste (including industries at and
above county level and key TVIE's) was 47%. The comprehensive utilization rate of
industrial solid waste for the industries at and above county level was 48.3%, which was
an increase of 3.1 % over the previous year.
SEPA, together with the State
Economic and Trade Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation and
the Ministry of Public Security, issued the National List of Hazardous Wastes.
