Calendar in April 2014

From Mar. 24 to Apr. 4, the sixth review meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety was held at the headquarters of IAEA in Vienna, Austria. MEP Chief Engineer on Nuclear Safety Liu Hua, the plenipotentiary, led the Chinese delegation to all the review activities and presented the report of China during the country review. During the meeting, Liu also met with Yukiya Amano, Director General of IAEA, Denis Flory, Deputy Director General, Allison Mac Farlane, Chairman of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Pierre-Franck Chevet, President of French Nuclear Safety Authority, Andy Hall, Chief of UK Office for Nuclear Regulation, Mohammad Anwar Habib, Chairman of Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority and Valery Bezzubtsev, Deputy Chairman of Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia. They exchanged views on topics including strengthening bilateral cooperation.

On April 3, the 2014 National Work Meeting on Environmental Monitoring was held in Shanghai. MEP Vice Minister Wu Xiaoqing attended the meeting and made remarks. MEP Chief Engineer Wan Bentai chaired the meeting and read aloud the instructions of Minister Zhou at this meeting.

On the same day, MEP published the list of urban sewage treatment facilities (including sewage treatment facilities in towns and industrial parks) that have been established and put into operation.

On the same day, MEP issued Guidelines on Risk Assessment of Corporate Environmental Accidents (on trial) and Catalogue on Key Hazardous Chemicals under Environmental Management.

On April 9, MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian chaired the ministerial executive meeting, deliberating and adopting in principle the implementing scheme of MEP regarding the Opinions on Division of Work for Central Tasks Set in the Government Work Report and four standards including Emission standard of air pollutants for boiler. The meeting also listened to report of assessment results of 2013 total pollution reduction and gave nod to the review opinions on export of hazardous waste by seven companies including TSE-AMM (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. MEP Vice Ministers Pan Yue, Wu Xiaoqing, Zhou Jian, Li Ganjie and Zhai Qing, head of the Discipline Inspection Group in MEP Zhou Ying, Member of Leading Party Members' Group of MEP He Jie and MEP Chief Engineer Wan Bentai attended the meeting.

On April 14, the evaluation meeting for phase I of water program was held in Beijing. CEO of the water program, MEP Vice Minister Wu Xiaoqing and Chief Economist of Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Feng Jun attended the meeting.

On April 16, MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie met with Ms. Kristine L. Svinicki, Commissioner of United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Beijing. They exchanged views on issues of common concern including bilateral cooperation on nuclear safety.

On April 18, MEP and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) jointly held a report meeting on the remote sensing and assessment of ten-year changes of national ecological environment (2000-2010) in Beijing. MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie and Vice President of CAS Shi Erwei attended the meeting and made remarks.

On the same day, MEP issued Circular on Strengthening Environmental Management to Address the Conflict of Excessive Production Capacity.

On April 22, the meeting of the coordination group for air pollution control of the Yangtze River Delta was held in Nanjing. MEP Vice Minister Zhai Qing attended the meeting and made remarks. Participants of the meeting included members of the office of the coordination group on air pollution control in the Yangtze River Delta, provincial governors (mayors) from the three provinces (Jiangsu, Anhui and Zhejiang) and Shanghai, vice secretary-general, EPB directors, heads from related prefectures, personnel responsible for early warning and joint action, chiefs from MEP departments concerned, the emergency response center, solid waste management center and Northeast China environmental supervision center

On April 24, the eighth meeting of the Standing Committee of the 12th NPC deliberated and adopted the newly revised Environmental Protection Law, which will take effect as of Jan. 1, 2015.

On April 28, MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie held bilateral talks with Yoon Seong-kyu, Korean Minister for the Environment and they exchanged views on issues of common concern.

On April 29, MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian went to Chongqing to investigate environmental work and visited local environmental staff. During his investigation, Zhou attended the Chongqing EPB Cadres Meeting and gave important remarks on doing a good job in environmental protection and fighting resolutely against pollution.

On the same day, MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie, as a special representative of Minister Zhou Shengxian, led a delegation to the 16th TEMM which was held in Daegu, Korea. During the meeting the three Ministers also presented award for winners of the 2014 Tripartite Environment Ministers Award.

On April 30, MEP held a work videoconference on strengthening protection of drinking water sources and properly addressing environmental emergencies. Vice Minister Zhai Qing attended the meeting and made remarks. From May, the ministry will launch a four-month examination on concentrated drinking water source protection areas.

On the same day, MEP published the key projects to be completed by 2014 according to the National Responsibility Letter on Total Pollution Reduction of Major Pollutants during the 12th Five-Year Plan Period.
