On May 3, the application and selection of the Eighth China Baosteel Environment Award kicked off in Beijing. Zhou Jian, MEP Vice Minister read out the announcement on behalf of the organizing committee. Chair of the organizing committee, honorary President of China Environmental Protection Foundation Qu Geping gave a speech.
On May 5-6, the 15th Tripartite Environment Ministers Meeting among China, Japan and South Korea (TEMM) was held in Kitakyushu, Japan. Li Ganjie, Vice Minister for Environmental Protection of China, special representative of MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian, Nobuteru Ishihara, Environment Minister of Japan and Yoon Seong-kyu, Environment Minister of Republic of Korea led delegations to the meeting.
On May 9, the Annual Conference of Ecology and Nature Conservation Association was held in Nanjing. Organized by MEP Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences, the conference features the theme of optimizing the ecological security patterns and building a beautiful China. MEP Chief Engineer Wan Bentai attended the conference and delivered a speech.
On May 10, MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian chaired MEP executive meeting in Beijing. The meeting conveyed the spirit of several important speeches made recently by Xi Jinping and other top leaders, listened to a report on the target assessment results of total emission reduction of major pollutants in 2012, deliberated and adopted Ecological Protection Plan for Lakes with Sound Ecosystems (2011-2020), Limits and Measurement Methods for Emissions from Light-Duty Vehicles (China StageV), and the opinions on the examination and approval of the environmental impact assessment for some construction projects and some enterprises' export application for hazardous wastes. Vice Ministers of MEP Wu Xiaoqing, Zhou Jian, Li Ganjie and Zhai Qing, head of discipline inspection group Zhou Ying, member of our leading Party members'group He Jie, Chief Engineer Wan Bentai and Chief Engineer on Nuclear Safety Xu Qinghua participated in the meeting.
On May 15, MEP released Letter of Target Responsibility for Total Pollution Reduction of the 12th Five-Year Plan Period and list of key pollution reduction projects to be completed in 2013.
On May 17, the campaign of 2013 Centennial Green Trip across China was launched in Beijing. Chen Changzhi, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, attended the launching ceremony and presented the winners of Journalism Award with certificates. MEP Chief Engineer on Nuclear Safety Xu Qinghua attended the meeting and made remarks.
On May 20, MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian met with Corrado Clini, CCICED Council Member and former Italian Environment Minister in Beijing. They exchanged views on environmental issues of common concern.
On the same day, MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie met with Francisco J. Sánchez, Under Secretary of US Department of Commerce, and a trade delegation on nuclear power in Beijing. They explored issues on China-US cooperation on nuclear safety.
On May 21, MEP held the 2013 National Work Meeting on International Environmental Cooperation in Beijing. MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie attended the meeting and made remarks.
On May 23, Secretary General of China National Committee on Biodiversity Conservation (CNCBC) and Vice Minister of Ministry of Environmental Protection Li Ganjie took part in the "May 22 International Day for Biodiversity" commemorative activities. Representatives from UNDP, UNEP, IUCN and other international organizations participated in the activities.
On May 23, MEP issued indicators for pilot national demonstration areas of building ecological civilization (on trial).
On May 24, the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee conducted the sixth group study on vigorously promoting the building of ecological civilization. CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping hosted the study session and emphasized that we must remain committed to the basic state policy of conserving resources and protecting the environment and move toward a new era of socialism with ecological progress.
On the same day, MEP issued four guiding documents including Policies on Pollution Prevention and Control for Cement Industry, Policies on Pollution Prevention and Control for Iron & Steel Industry, Policies on Pollution Prevention and Control for Sulphuric Acid Industry and Policies on Prevention and Control of Pollution from Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
On May 27, MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian met with a delegation led by Ms. Lena Ek, Sweden's Minister for the Environment in Beijing. They exchanged views on environmental issues of common concern. After the meeting, Mr. Zhou Shengxian and Ms. Ek witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for Long-term Strategic Cooperation by the CCICED and the Stockholm Environment Institute.
On May 28, Zhou Shengxian, Secretary of MEP leading Party members' group and Minister of MEP, presided over an enlarged meeting of the ministerial leading Party members' group to convey the important speech delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping during the sixth group study session of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee. Zhou emphasized that, based on actual situation, we shall carry out in-depth study and practically align ourselves with Xi's important speech. By giving prominence to key points and learning by doing, we shall strive to create a sound working and living environment for the people. Vice Ministers of MEP Pan Yue, Wu Xiaoqing, Zhou Jian, Li Ganjie and Zhai Qing, head of discipline inspection group Zhou Ying, member of the leading Party members' group He Jie, Chief Engineer Wan Bentai and Chief Engineer on Nuclear Safety Liu Hua participated in the meeting and shared their learning experience. Officials in charge of all departments from the Ministry, its dispatched agencies and its affiliates also sit in the meeting.
On May 29, All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) held the third News Café on the Dream of China in Beijing. Wan Bentai, MEP Chief Engineer, was invited to the café to have a discussion on the theme of the Dream of China and Building Ecological Civilization.
On May 30, MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian met with a delegation led by Ms. Doris Leuthard, Swiss Federal Councilor and Head of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) in Beijing. They exchanged views on environmental issues of common concern.
