CENEWS-The second BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting was held in Goa, India recently. Vice Minister Zhao Yingmin, Indian Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Shri Anil Madhav Dave, Russian Federal Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Sergey Donskoy, South African Minister of Environmental Affairs Ms. Edna Molewa, and special envoy of Brazilian Minister of the Environment Fernando Coimbra attended the meeting.
The meeting echoed the theme identified by the 2016 BRICS Summit-“building responsive, inclusive and collective solutions” and was designed to promote mutual understanding, and deepen the common consensus on environmental cooperation among BRICS countries. The ministers or special envoy of the five countries shared their respective progress in environmental protection and had discussions in priority areas of environmental cooperation among BRICS countries.
In his remarks, Zhao focused on the concept of ecological civilization and the ongoing environmental protection effort in China and put forward the following recommendations, a. to conduct policy dialogue and pragmatic cooperation among BRICS countries on improving environmental quality and promoting green development; b. under the framework of the 2030 sustainable development agenda, to enhance the urban environmental cooperation among BRICS countries, with the emphasis on the dialogues and cooperation in the areas of urban air quality, solid wastes, and water environment quality; c. to establish a platform and network for communications among the environmental think tanks in BRICS countries.
Zhao announced that in 2017 China will hold the third meeting of BRICS Environmental Working Groups, organize a parallel International Workshop on Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development Goals, and convene the third BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting at a proper timing.
The meeting deliberated and adopted the Memorandum of Understanding of Environmental Cooperation among BRICS Countries, and released the Joint Statement of the Second BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Zhao also had bilateral talks with Shri Anil Madhav Dave, Indian Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, and exchanged views on water environment governance, rural environmental management, and other mutually interested issues.
