BEIJING, Sept. 7, CENEWS-Vice Minister Zhao Yingmin met in Beijing with Erik Solheim, UNEP Executive Director. The two sides exchanged views on issues of common concern, such as the cooperation between China and UNEP.
Zhao began by extending welcome on behalf of Minister Chen Jining to Solheim. He said, MEP and UNEP have enjoyed many years of friendly cooperation and the bilateral cooperation has been very fruitful. We believe that under the leadership of Executive Director Solheim the bilateral cooperation will anticipate further development.
Zhao gave a brief introduction to the new deployments, new requirements, and new progress China has made in environmental protection. He said the Chinese Government has for years put the development of ecological civilization and environmental protection on a more important and strategic position, and understood, promoted, and implemented it at an unprecedented level. China has declared war on the air, water, and soil pollution, accelerated the environmental governance, and addressed tough challenges with tough measures. Also, notable progress has been made in the environmental legislation and enforcement.
This year marks the start of the 13th Five-Year Plan period. The general principles and development goals and directions of the 13th Five-Year Plan agree well with the 2030 sustainable development goals (SDG) commenced this year, which has provided very favorable conditions for the national implementation of the SDG. As a UN agency dedicated to environmental protection, UNEP has great potentials in being part of China’s environmental protection effort. We’re fully confident of the future cooperation with UNEP and believe the bilateral cooperation will be win-win, said Zhao.
China has also enthusiastically advanced the South-South cooperation, apart from national endeavors, said Zhao, China stands ready to work with UNEP and will, building on previous practices, explore new pathways for South-South cooperation on environmental protection, and facilitate the communications and sharing of environmental concepts, technologies and products between China and other developing countries. In the meantime, China is ready to strengthen cooperation with UNEP in its initiative of building green “Belt and Road”.
Solheim requested Zhao to convey his sincere regards to Minister Chen and appreciated Zhao’s presentations. He said the UNEP under his helm will prioritize the cooperation with China and look forward to more diversified and in-depth bilateral cooperation. The two sides reached broad consensus on the UNEP involvement in China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, the staff exchange, and the South-South cooperation especially the green “Road and Belt” initiative.
