BEIJING-Vice Minister Zhao Yingmin met in Beijing with Karmenu Vella, the visiting EU Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs, and Fisheries, on Nov. 21. The two sides exchanged views on the progress made in global environmental agendas, the Chinese and EU environmental policies, and China-EU environmental cooperation.
Zhao greeted Mr. Vella on behalf of Minister Chen Jining. He said China and EU have maintained long-term and friendly communications and cooperation in the environment field. The two sides have conducted pragmatic cooperation programs and EU has supported China’s environmental protection work with abundant management concepts and policy measures. China highly values the pragmatic cooperation with EU in the environment field, and to deepen and enhance bilateral environment cooperation will be an important measure to fully implement China-EU 2020 Strategic Agenda for Cooperation and a concrete move to deepen China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership.
Zhao noted that China and EU are at a crucial stage for exploring a mutually beneficial and win-win new type environmental cooperation, and there are great potentials for future cooperation with both opportunities and challenges it presents. China has further developed ecological civilization and constantly advanced the comprehensive deepening of reforms, which has offered new areas and arena for the environmental cooperation in the new era. The two sides negotiated and signed the Common Principles of China and EU for Promoting and Deepening Technological Cooperation, according to which the two sides shall, building on existing environmental cooperation, further enhance substantial cooperation, promote the prevention and control of air, water, and soil pollution, conduct cooperation on green growth and circular economy related environmental policies, and make contributions to the global sustainable development undertaking and closer bilateral relations.
Mr. Vella expressed thanks to Zhao’s greeting and said that the EU and China have been deepening environmental cooperation and that he was satisfied with the outcomes of the bilateral cooperation. He hoped that the two sides would further enhance pragmatic environmental cooperation building on existing cooperation and contribute to closer bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership.
