Li Ganjie meets with Italian Minister for the Environment, Land and Sea

Chinese report by Lyv Wangshu, Du Xuanyi, CENEWS

BEIJING, Jun. 14-Secretary of the Leading Party Members’ Group Li Ganjie met with Gian Luca Galletti, Italian Minister for the Environment, Land and Sea, in Beijing today. The two sides exchanged views on deepening bilateral cooperation in the environment field and other issues of common concern.

Li began by extending welcome on behalf of his ministry to Gian Luca Galletti and his delegation and then briefed them on the environmental protection policies in China. The CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core has put the ecological development at a more prominent position, devised and facilitated a series of pioneering and long-term endeavors, and pushed for the holistic and historic transformations of the eco-environmental awareness and practices, since the 18th National Congress of the CPC was held, said Li. Moreover, in order to fully implement the “innovation-driven, coordinated, green, opening, and sharing-based” development concepts, we released the 13th Five-Year Plan for National Eco-environmental Protection, implemented the three action plans targeting air, water, and soil pollution, and made positive progress.

Li pointed out that with considerably daunting environmental situations in China, the ecological environment has become one of the prominent weak points in the efforts to complete the building of a moderately prosperous society. In light of this, we feel stressful and yet confident, that’s because first, the Chinese Government has attached great importance to this issue, and through reforms and innovations, established a framework of ecological development institutions with multiple pillars. Second, the whole society has gained more environmental awareness, and an initial framework of green actions participated by all has been established. Third, the economic, technological development and accumulation since the reform and opening-up has provided certain material conditions for addressing the current environmental problems. We’re now working on creating sound work and living environment for the people, with the environmental improvement at the core, by focusing on solving pressing environmental problems, and driven by the deepened reforms.

Li said that the environmental cooperation between China and Italy dates back to a long time ago and generates notable results through extensive and pragmatic cooperation activities. It is a role model for international bilateral cooperation. China is actively promoting the green Belt and Road Initiative. The Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held not long ago gathered and showcased certain outcomes under the Belt and Road Initiative. Of late, the two governments issued the China-Italy Action Plan on Strengthening the Economic, Trade, Cultural, Scientific and Technological Cooperation (2017-2020), identifying environment as one of the priority areas of cooperation. All these have provided the driving forces and opportunities for bilateral environmental cooperation. In light of the new circumstances, the bilateral environmental cooperation has already stood at a new starting point. China stands ready to work with the Italian side to keep deepening the cooperation on the environment and sustainable development, and continue to play an active role in facilitating the political ties and economic and trade communications between the two countries.

Gian Luca Galletti applauded China’s endeavors and achievements in the environment protection field, and hoped the two sides may continue to, based on China’s needs for environmental protection, give play to the technological edges of the Italian side, launch extensive and pragmatic cooperation activities, substantially push the two countries to honor the international environmental conventions and facilitate the extensive communications and cooperation among the governments, scientific research institutions, and industries of the two countries.

After the meeting, the two sides signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the Cooperation on Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development between the two environmental ministries, in accordance with which, the environmental protection departments of the two countries will step up the pragmatic cooperation on air, water, and soil pollution control as well as the environmental protection capacity building, environmental policies and legislations, and the implementation of multilateral environmental agreements.
