NANJING, Jun. 5-The main activity celebrating the 2017 World Environment Day & the International Summit of New Environmental Protection Technology were held in Nanjing Municipality, the capital city of Jiangsu Province on June 5. Secretary of the MEP Leading Party Members’ Group Li Ganjie, Secretary of the CPC Jiangsu provincial committee Li Qiang, and Acting Governor of the provincial government Wu Zhenglong attended the events. Li Ganjie emphasized the importance to firmly develop the awareness that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, push for the adoption of green development patterns and lifestyles, and create good environment for the whole society to contribute to environmental protection.
Before the opening ceremony, Li Ganjie, Li Qiang, and Wu Zhenglong met with delegates from Israel, Denmark, the U.S., and Germany. At the meeting, Li Qiang hoped the summit may bring closer the partnership between Jiangsu and the above countries in the areas of environmental protection and ecological conservation, generate more outcomes, and together well preserve the ecological environment and promote green development. Then Li Ganjie, Li Qiang, and Wu Zhenglong visited the booths of the participating environmental technology companies at home and abroad. They inquired about the new technologies and findings in front of the booths of the overseas companies from Israel, Denmark, Italy, France, and Germany, and those of the Jiangsu Provincial Environmental Monitoring Center and domestic companies including Dongjiang Environment and Yongker Environment. They talked with the business owners and technicians, and hoped that the companies may take advantage of the summit as a platform to further strengthen the spread and use of new environmental protection technologies, advance the in-depth development of the scientific researches in the environment sector, and bring benefits to the mankind.
In his speech, Li Ganjie said the concept that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” proposed by General Secretary Xi Jinping has revealed the underlying relationship between development and protection, renewed the traditional perception of natural resources, broke the ideological shackles of simply putting development on the opposing side of protection, and identified the methodology for realizing the internal integrity, mutual complementarity and coexistence of development and protection. The theme for this year’s World Environment Day, “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, aims to guide the whole society to firmly develop the awareness that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, respect nature, conform to the nature, and protect nature, adopt a green lifestyle, and build a beautiful country.
Li said that the Chinese Government has devised and launched a series of pioneering and long-term initiatives, and remarkably accelerated the ecological progress since the 18th National Congress of the CPC was held, under the guidance of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important and strategic concepts of promoting ecological progress. As a result, both the ecological conservation awareness and practices have experienced historical and holistic changes, initial results have been achieved in green development, and the eco-environmental quality has been improved. On the other hand, we should be aware that development still conflicts greatly with protection, that the ecological environment has become a weak point in our efforts to complete the building of a moderately prosperous society, and that the environmental protection is still at a crucial stage, marching under heavy weight. We must give priority to ecological conservation and pursue green development, and preserve the ecological environment from all respects, in all regions, and throughout whole processes. We should all move to adopt green development patterns and lifestyles. We should step up the awareness raising and education activities on ecological civilization, make greater efforts to turn the public’s environmental awareness into the willingness and actions for preserving the resources and protecting the environment, advocate frugal, moderate, green, low-carbon, civilized, and healthy lifestyles and consumption patterns, and create good environment for the participation by all in this effort.
Green development represents the trend of scientific, technological, and industrial reforms, and is an area of development with the greatest potentials, said Li. From the macro perspective, the innovation in environmental science and technology helps boost the change of development patterns and the economic restructuring. From the micro perspective, it provides direct solutions to pollution problems. MEP will actively promote the advances of green scientific and technological innovation. First, we will follow the problem-oriented principle, focus on the environmental improvement, and make breakthroughs in key technologies related to pollution control and ecological restoration. Second, we will pursue integrated innovation and integrate mature, state-of-art technologies. Third, we will promote industry-university-research cooperation and further integrate technological innovation with industries. Fourth, we will provide affordable technologies and work faster to forge a new framework for environmental technology management, a framework that is win-win in terms of environmental improvement and pollution treatment cost. Fifth, we will bring in advanced technologies and go global, and conduct two-way international communications on environmental technologies.
In his speech, Wu Zhenglong congratulated on the opening of the summit and extended welcome to the international and Chinese participants on behalf of Jiangsu provincial committee and government. He said, the province is currently studying and implementing the guidelines of the important statements of General Secretary Xi Jinping and his new concepts, ideas, and strategies for governing the country. They will, focusing on the objectives set out at the 13th provincial congress of Party representatives, firmly establish the awareness that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, actively adopt the green development concepts, spread and apply the new international environmental technologies, boost the international environmental communications and cooperation, be more self-conscious to promote green development, circular development, and low-carbon development, and write a new chapter on green development through highlighting the innovation, focusing on enriching the citizens, and completing the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects and at high levels, as well as accelerating the pace to build a “strong, abundant, beautiful, and high-level” new Jiangsu. We sincerely look forward to working with you to seek sustainable development, share development opportunities, and create a beautiful future.
