BEIJING, Mar. 21-Minister of Environmental Protection Chen Jining met with his Israeli counterpart Zeev Elkin on Mar. 21. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral cooperation in the environment field.
Chen began by extending welcome on behalf of his ministry to the delegation headed by Zeev Elkin and then briefly described the latest developments in environmental protection in China. He said the Chinese Government has attached great importance to the environmental protection, especially since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, which incorporated the ecological progress into the overall plan for promoting the economic, political, social, cultural, and ecological progresses. Also, China has paid unparalleled attention to and made unprecedented efforts in promoting ecological progress, introduced the action plans for control of air, water, and soil pollution one after another, and moved forward with systematic reforms and innovation on environmental institutions and mechanisms. As a result, positive progress has been made, and the eco-environmental quality has been on steady improvement.
Chen said that China is confronted with complicated and challenging environmental problems, and one of the very important tasks in China’s modernization process is to work out solutions to the conflict between economic development and environmental protection. Israel is known as a country of innovation and takes a leading role in the world in such advanced technologies as water pollution treatment and water resources recycling as well as scientific management, which provides invaluable experience that China can learn from. China stands ready to establish a long-term and effective platform for cooperation with Israel, and under the framework of the memorandum of understanding between China and Israel on environmental cooperation, enable the cooperation to be more systematic and specific, learn from each other by way of sharing experience and mutual visits by human resources, advance the environmental S&T communications and innovation, and facilitate bilateral environmental cooperation.
Elkin appreciated China’s endeavors and achievements in the area of environmental protection. China and Israel have great potentials in cooperation in the environment protection arena, he said, and he hoped the two sides would further enhance pragmatic environmental cooperation under the framework of memorandum of understanding. Israeli side is ready to share state-of-art environmental technologies with China and make effort towards mutual benefits, win-win outcomes and bilateral sustainable development.
As a member of the delegation headed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Elkin attended the third meeting of China-Israel Joint Committee on Innovation Cooperation, on the sidelines of which Vice Minister Zhao Yingmin signed with Israeli side the Memorandum of Understanding between the People’s Republic of China and the State of Israel on Environmental Cooperation. MEP became a new addition to the China-Israel Joint Committee on Innovation Cooperation this year.
