MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie met with Mr. Oleg Deripaska, Chairman of Ecology Committee, China and Russia Friendship, Peace and Development Council and President of UC RUSAL. They exchanged views on environmental issues of common concern.
Li welcomed the delegation led by Deripaska and briefed them on the current situation of China’s environmental protection. He noted that as the largest developing country in the world, China is experiencing fast industrialization and urbanization. Resource and environmental issues have become the biggest restraint on China’s sustainable development. Environmental protection faces both grave challenge and good opportunities. First, the environmental awareness of the whole society has been raised to a record level and the public are enthusiastic about supervising and participating in environmental protection. Second, both the central government and local government value environmental protection and the investment in environmental protection has increased significantly. Third, the achievement of China’ economic development has laid solid economic and technological foundation for strengthening environmental protection.
Li pointed out that MEP is making active effort to push the following central tasks to improve environmental quality. First, we are comprehensively developing environmental legal system and strictly enforce the newly revised Environmental Protection Law. Second, we are promoting industrial upgrade through raising environmental threshold and pollution discharge standards. Third, we are developing and pushing for pollution prevention and control action plans regarding air, water and soil pollution and preparing to wage three battles on air, water and soil pollution. Fourth, we are strengthening protection of natural eco system and biodiversity while giving more attention to pollution prevention and control.
Li added that since its foundation, China and Russia Friendship, Peace and Development Council has played outstanding role in promoting healthy, steady and sustainable development of bilateral ties. China values the work of the ecology committee and the establishment of this committee will further enrich and expand China-Russia environmental cooperation. He also said that as the Chairman from the Chinese side of the committee, he is willing to work with his Russian colleagues to jointly coordinate and enhance bilateral environmental technology exchanges and industrial cooperation to achieve common green growth.
Deripaska thanked Li for his reception. He said the Ecology Committee of China and Russia Friendship, Peace and Development Council will provide a sound platform for social environmental exchanges and cooperation between China and Russia and he is willing to make effort to promote sound development of environmental industry and deepen exchanges on environmental protection with China through various means.
Deripaska visits China to attend the military parade marking the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-fascist War and the 2015 Summer Davos Forum.
